About Us

North and South Shenango Joint Municipal Authority

The N.S.S.J.M.A. owns and operates a sanitary sewer collection system and wastewater treatment plant. These facilities provide service to properties in North and South Shenango Townships in Crawford County, Pennsylvania along the eastern boundary of Pymatuning Lake.

The Collection system is comprised of 55 miles of 8 inch diameter vitrified clay collection sewer, 12 miles of 8 inch polyvinyl chloride collector sewer and 7 miles of 12, 15 and 18 inch diameter vitrified clay interceptor sewer. Seventeen collector pumping stations are located throughout the collection system. These stations are responsible for pumping the flow collected from the 8 inch collector lines to higher elevations, which eventually discharge into the interceptor sewer. Six interceptor pumping stations located adjacent to the interceptor sewer are responsible for pumping the majority of the flow collected by the collection system to the treatment facility.

The treatment facility is composed of three treatment units that are designed to be operated concurrently with the ability to be removed to accommodate low flow situations and allow for maintenance with uninterrupted flow. Using both a single Sequencing Batch Reactor and two oxidation-nitrification treatment units the system is rated to be capable of treating 1.7 MGD of flow as defined in the NPDES Permit # PA0100277 and Water Quality Management Permit # 2075402. Reduction of phosphorus is achieved through the addition of Ferrous Chloride to the facility’s influent flow. Disinfection of the effluent is achieved by the addition of sodium hypochlorite prior to discharge into the Shenango River.
